Coal tar and light oil are by-products from the coking process at steel mills, accounting for 3 to 4% of our coke production output. Coal tar and light oil purchased by CSCC from CSC Group are distilled and purified at the Coal Chemical Manufacturing Department to manufacture a number of major products, such as soft pitch, naphthalene, refined naphthalene, benzene, and toluene. The products are chemical products and are not genetically modified products.
As green energy, energy conservation, and carbon reduction have become issues of concern nowadays, there is a growing demand for parts and components related to electric vehicles and energy storage systems, which has led to the further development of soft pitch, a main product of coal tar at CSCC. As soft pitch is used in anode materials for lithium-ion batteries and ultra-high power electrodes, the traditional coal chemical industry is gradually extending and pivoting to the high-tech carbon material and green energy industries.
With countries around the world actively investing in the development of new energy industries, lithium-ion batteries have become the mainstream energy storage medium for mobile devices, thanks to their relatively good energy density. Electric vehicle batteries have become a current market trend, owing to the rollout of new energy vehicle incentive policies in China and the European Union over the years. The modularization of power batteries with supercapacitors, which are regarded as new generation high-power energy storage components, can give rise to high output power from these batteries. With a commitment to developing high-value green carbon materials, CSCC has developed anode materials for high-energy and high-power lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in new energy industries.

The Company's key product sales status | |
---|---|
Soft Pitch | The Company maintains a long-term sales agreement with an Australian client, supplying approximately 50% of the client's annual demand for soft pitch. The partnership has remained stable due to consistent product quality and supply reliability, with a ten-year long-term supply contract in place. |
Naphthalene | A key raw material for carbon black production, the Company’s annual production of cresylic acid is approximately 130,000 metric tons, mainly supplied to the domestic market, Japan, and South Korea through well-established distribution channels. |
efined Naphthalene | The market for chemical-grade refined naphthalene is primarily located in Mainland China and India, with clients primarily from the dye intermediate industry. The market for refined naphthalene pills is concentrated in Asian regions such as South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka, major production and consumption regions for naphthalene pills. The Company holds the market share exceeding 60% in this region. |
Benzene | Over the past two years, Taiwan has experienced an average annual shortage of approximately 780,000 metric tons of benzene. The Company currently produces about 57,000 metric tons per year, which is entirely supplied to the domestic market, meeting only a small portion of Taiwan's demand gap. |
Toluene | The Company produces approximately 700 metric tons of toluene per month, primarily for export, with a small portion sold through distributors to domestic solvent manufacturers. |
Mesophase carbonphere products | The Company produces approximately 7,500 metric tons of mesophase carbon microbeads annually. In addition to supplying domestic and international lithium-ion battery manufacturers, the product line has expanded to include mesophase graphite carbon microbeads, advanced high specific surface area carbon materials, and isotropic graphite blocks. The Company continues to enhance quality and purity to meet client demands worldwide. |
